Redefining Strength

For many individuals with developmental disabilities, the definition of strength can be quite remarkable.

It can be as simple as the pride in completing a task, no matter how small, that once seemed impossible. It can be about communicating a need or simply getting through a tough day.

In a sense, it is the courage to face a world that tends not to grasp the resilience it takes to overcome challenges that seem insurmountable.

We should all learn to do better so as not to define these individuals by their disabilities, but by their unwavering spirit.

In a way, they teach us that true strength isn’t about what we can do, but about what we refuse to let stop us.

They are the true definition of: “Strength doesn’t come from what you can do, but from overcoming the things you (or others) thought you couldn’t do.”
